Textile art and textile artists were not a threat to the mainstream art world; they validated it through their aspiration to be part of it. Exclusive designs from talented artists and designers living and working in the UK. They had a spoking machine that did fake spoking [it pushed the threads apart rather than withdrawing them] so they brought this spoked cloth to me and I hand tied it into fancy bundles … they were doing things like sheets for Saudi Arabia … I loved it!

Janet Ledsham, despite having a fine art training in painting, always thought of herself as ‘a textile artist rather than an artist’ and was ‘proud to be called that - but, not limiting where I might show it and who might be interested in it.’ Her teaching career (1972-2004) spanned more than 3 decades of textile art and she retired just as new questions were being raised about its nature and future, so she identified as a textile artist for her entire career. 45 Helen O’Hare describes herself as a textile artist but ticks the ‘visual artist’ box for Arts Council applications as that is the closest, ‘don’t complicate it if you are looking for money!’ 46 She thinks ‘artist’ and ‘visual artist’ are too open, too broad, ‘if you say ‘textile art’ the person knows more specifically who you are and what you do,’ she thinks it is ‘wrong to be embarrassed and ashamed of being a textile artist.’ 47 Other artists have decided that it is best to not let the audience know specifically what you do.

This DIY for making the actual screen looks totally do-able with local materials, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried printing on t-shirts with plant-based or other natural dyes so that we can keep it local and not have to import dyes? However, for me, it’s such a refreshing change to see designs that challenge perceptions of the norm. Paint and appliqué are the dominant techniques and hand-stitch is prominent on only two squares.
