In this same year just a few months after finishing his final piece, Welcome Ode for children’s choir, he realized that he was no longer able to compose. The intensely rhythmic score and primitive scenario and choreography shocked the audience that was accustomed to the elegant conventions of classical ballet. Generally considered the greatest French composer since Debussy. (Of course, if you're going to tell anyone that, make sure you pronounce "Debussy" like "deb-yoo-SEE.") He was principal conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Herford, Germany, from 2006 to 2009 and music director of the Latvian National Opera from 2003 to 2007. Prokofiev wrote new sections for a 1940 production and it was then that the music really took off, eventually forming the basis of three popular suites. It took Prokofiev about ten years to complete his masterpiece. Among his important works are seven symphonies, especially the First, the Classical Symphony (1916–17), and the Fifth (1944); two violin concertos; five piano concertos; nine sonatas and other piano music; and chamber music.

That was the kind of symphony I wanted to write: a symphony in the classical style. Originally commissioned in 1915 by Serge Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, the famous impresario had personally worked with Prokofiev to develop a satisfactory scenario, but the project was interrupted by the war and the composer's sojourn in America.
