A remote military research station sends out a frantic distress call, ending with a chilling final command: Kill us all!

Until the End of the World (1991) shows another example where cyberpunk provides an assumed background, and a plot device, to an otherwise mood and character-driven story. I wish I could acknowledge the one who wrote Hard SF is a form of alternate universe fiction, set in a world where the world-view of American engineers in the late twentieth century is a precise reflection of The Way Things Are. Another is Alexei Panshin's novel Rite of Passage, with the adventures of young Mia Havero; plus Reefsong by Carol Severance, with its transformed Angie Dinsman.

Adapted from a story by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
