Our friendships, voices, images are all online. An Earthling should go out of his/her spacecraft without spacesuit only on Earth and other celestial objects with an atmosphere similar to Earth. Editor David Hartwell, who ultimately bought Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology, remembered some of the negotiation over the book’s contents: As I recall, [Sterling] had six writers (two of them collaborators of the original four), and I said that there had to be twelve to make a movement, or words to that effect.

Whole Earth Review 63 (Summer 1989): 78-82. Welcome to Tor.com’s Cyberpunk Week, where we’ll be delving into classics of this sub-genre as well as newer works, and tracing the evolution of what being “cyberpunk” or “post-cyberpunk” means. There was a time when this genre wasn't so stratified. Delany’s most recent book, the 2012 novel “Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders,” traces the lives of two young gay men from 2007 into the future. If nothing else, it will change the way you look at skyscrapers … tripping your imagination into thinking what it would be like to live on the vertical and not just the horizontal.

In 1936 the ambitious Things To Come, a visionary treatment of a utopian technocracy, was produced in Britain. There will still be some great science-fiction books, yes, but they’ll be called something else. They are set in a world that meets virtually every criteria of being science fiction, but it happens to be our world, and it’s barely tweaked by the author to make the technology just fractionally imaginary or fantastic. In his introduction to 1964's The Rest of the Robots Asimov calls this "the Frankenstein complex," which rings only one change on the Faustian plot of the creature that destroys its creator. "Faust [the scholar who is willing to sell his soul in his quest for knowledge] must indeed face Mephistopheles," he wrote, "but Faust does not have to be defeated.. ..

How is Wintermute able to recreate people and places Case knows? The Gernsbackian tradition reached its zenith at the 1939 New York World's Fair, where corporations and governments sought to construct their own visions of "the world of tomorrow," based on technological utopian ideologies. Reese, aging hero of the US space program, knows better. How does the shorter barrel length of many bullpup guns affect aim when using iron sights? Rather, these stories are ruminative, obsessed with memories and what might have been.

Published pseudonymously by Bruce Sterling (as “Vincent Ominiaveritas”), not only did it slag sf’s literary establishment, which produced “stories that lie gasping and wall-eyed with anemia,” but it also ridiculed those up-and-coming writers who had yet to acknowledge the Cyberpunk agenda: SF must stop recycling the same half-baked traditions about the nature of the human future. A tall figure in trench coat, hat, and shades comes stalking into Stuart Cole's down-market bar in San Francisco's tenderloin.

That was daunting news to genre enthusiasts, but the number of editors who crave it continues to grow. Ender's Game was published in 1985, long after the invention of the PC and the internet, but long before either of them had risen to prominence in society. Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology, poised between literature and popular culture, embraces the dissonance. I think I was probably twelve years old when I read that, and I never got over the wonder of that story, and how Borges in this very limited number of words could make you feel that he’s seen every last thing in the universe, just by sonorously listing a number of very peculiar and mismatched items and events.
